200-some Soldiers wait in formation at Ft Stewart, just before being released after serving a 15 month tour in Iraq. One of the most sobering things was walking up to the field just before the ceremony and passing a long line of trees, each tree with a memorial stone for a fallen Soldier.
Yesterday we drove up to Ft Stewart, GA to welcome home our close friend, CAPT Chaplain Jason Nobles. Though weary from his trip, Jason was his usual cheery self. He had traveled from Ramadi to Kuwait to Germany, then on to Hunter Airfield in Savannah, GA. After landing at Hunter, the troops drove about 1 hour on buses to Ft Stewart where they were met by several hundred anxious family members. I think he deserves a break!!
Lisette Nobles had secured several orange helium balloons to her baby stroller, so that Jason would have no trouble finding her. While we anxiously waited, the storm clouds rolled in and just as the Soldiers were marching out to the field after leaving the buses, it started to pour!
The rain only lasted for a short time, and before long the sun was out again. Here, Jason is finally reunited with his family after a long time away.
We spent some time at the Nobles home, along with Jason's father who, like us, had also driven up from Orlando. Lissette treated us to chicken pot pie and peach cobbler topped with Vanilla Breyer's ice cream. The peach cobbler alone made the trip worth it!
With a long drive home to Orlando, we left at 5:30 pm. Perhaps some day we will have more time to hear Jason's stories about his service in Ramadi, but he needs some well deserved time with his family. This much I do know - he served God and his country with honor, touching the lives of many men and women while he was there. He sacrificed his comfort for 15 months to serve as a Chaplain, side-by-side with other men and women who are fighting for our freedom. Through his faithful service, he has been an inspiration to us all.
Jason - we salute you for your service to your country!!
Peace and blessings,
John
